Alex Hernandez

Havana, Cuba, 1982

Alex Hernández is an artist whose work is inscribed in the processual and investigative tradition within art. He is interested in investigating the functioning of our cultural responses and generating an allegorical object to the network of industries that hides behind the various human identities. In a time marked by the voluptuousness of information, he proposes to reflect on the laxity of our consciousness.

Behind each project we will find a para-scientific essay whose objective is to delve into the cultural manipulation of our perceptions. The selection of annotations, images, devices and subtle sensorial experiments he presents us with revolves around the biopolitics of knowledge and the senses. It dislocates and strains the languages of art, feeds on the interdisciplinary, moves to the participatory, even to the performative. In his practice, Conceptual Art is nothing more than an instrument that allows him to place on the table, with a neatness worthy of a surgeon, the body of an aesthetic that has been perverted as an object of power and domination.

His themes range from the study of history to issues associated with the environment, collective imaginaries and cultural practices in different geographical scenarios. Graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 2010, Alex has been developing a career of indisputable solidity. This is evidenced by his participation in events of the stature of the Venice Biennial and the Havana Biennial, as well as a substantial number of personal and collective exhibitions. Among the most notable of these exhibitions are Estado natural (Habana Gallery, Cuba); Inconclusive weft (NG Art Gallery, Panama); SEASON (Cleveland Institute of Art, USA); No more. Says the hard (Nunu Art Gallery, Taiwan); Nada personal (National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba); Requiem for a failed state end (Contemporary Art Center of Nuremberg, Germany); The Cuban Matrix (Torrance Art Museum, USA), among others.
His work is part of important institutional and private collections such as the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Cuba), the Consejo Nacional de Artes Plásticas (Cuba), the Pérez Art Museum of Miami (USA) and the Cleveland Institute of Art (USA).
