"Lo que es igual, no es ventaja Vol.2" is a group exhibition by REGULARNORMAL, a project led by curator Danny Báez, specially designed for our Project Room in Madrid. It will be inaugurated on February 27 at 6 p.m. and will be open to the public until May 1.

Danny Baez with this exhibition connects the artistic visions of eight young artists currently living and working in New York (USA). The central theme is the globalization of human relations. It proposes to reflect on contemporary dynamics linked to such cardinal issues as travel, friendship, dialogue and cultural interconnection, regional art circuits and local imaginaries. In short, it offers us a fresh look at human identity and, especially, its ramifications in the postmodern art world.

The curator also offers an overview of what is currently happening in the New York art circuit through artists from the Dominican Republic, South Korea, the United States, Puerto Rico and Germany. Vibrant, unprejudiced and enriching visions that will allow the Madrid public and the visitors that will come to the city on the occasion of ARCOMadrid 2025 to enjoy an experience that explores valid strategies for the construction of a socioemotional landscape resistant to the vortexes of our times.

What is equal is not an advantage

It has been a recurring approach at REGULARNORMAL to build exhibitions based primarily on the synchronicity that might exist between the invited artists. Once assigned, the theme emerges. For this presentation, a collaborative effort between REGULARNORMAL and our esteemed colleagues at THE APARTMENT, we have chosen a theme that celebrates the experience of traveling to unfamiliar places and meeting a stranger who, like you, is a newcomer to that city or country.

These artists, who play a crucial role in our exhibition, have the opportunity to travel, do gallery shows, biennials, art fairs, residencies, institutional exhibitions, family visits and many other events in their lives. With that in mind, we present the situation mentioned in the opening text, and whether, in an energetic agreement, both parties decide to move forward with building a possible friendship, camaraderie, lasting or short-term relationship or a single moment of extended memories. It is a subject that arouses our curiosity, and around these connections, we are interested in knowing first hand how they are represented within their respective artistic practices.

"What is equal, is not advantageous." presents the possibility of an unexpected equilibrium between two (or more) individuals who are both in a state of real-time discovery, given the circumstances of a chance encounter between two "tourists" who have little or no prior knowledge or recognition of the exact space they are occupying at that given moment.

This title comes from a phrase that we often hear in the Dominican Republic, which is very useful in various conversations, moments of particular opinions and as a self-help reflection for the purpose of finding some validation. It is equivalent to a match where neither team is ahead of the other, or vice versa.

Eight artists, each with a unique perspective and artistic style, co-existing in the essence of community, present their vision of the context envisioned for this presentation, which premieres during ARCOMadrid 2025 and will be on view through May 5. This is the first time REGULARNORMAL exhibits in Madrid. It is part of a series of international exhibitions in our programming for the rest of the year and focused on bringing us closer to the global art community.

We thank the team at El Apartamento for their invaluable assistance in this process and, again, for inviting us to their impressive gallery space. The same goes to our eight artists, whose trust, willingness and support continue to give us a purpose to remain committed and accountable to the core values of our mission.
