The Apartment, Havana
Our gallery is celebrating a decade and, to celebrate it, we wanted to bring together our friends from both sides of the Atlantic. The celebrations begin in Havana, with the opening of the group exhibition Volume IThe first of its kind will be inaugurated in Madrid a few weeks later. Volume II. Between the two exhibitions a connection is established that transcends geography and time, to offer the viewer the clearest possible picture of our history during these years of growth and experimentation: our main lines of work, our adventures and our sleepless nights. In the hands of the artists with whom we collaborate, we wanted to leave the responsibility of any narrative based on our identity, our essence, our gaze.
It has not been an express intention to pay tribute to that mythical exhibition that, in the 80s of the last century, shook the framework of Cuban art, opening in the island the doors to a contemporaneity that still resonates strongly. But it's not a coincidence either. Decadewith its two volumes, in addition to a celebration, is an effort to make history and collect the memories of what has happened with Cuban contemporary art in the last ten years. Ten years in which El Apartamento, through the powerful work of its artists, has played a decisive role.
If we had to choose a word to sum up the spirit of this mega-exhibition, it would be meeting. In each project carried out in these years there is something that always happens and that generates in us a deep satisfaction: the meeting of great artists of the 80s and 90s with the younger ones, in a frank harmony; the dialogue and the interconnection of the ideo-aesthetic concerns of different generations; the enjoyment, the mutual support, the understanding between one and the other. And this encounter generates a set of highly personal, but highly enriched languages. Languages that are interconnected and make up a puzzlea sort of map. And that map is the essence of our identity as a project.
Celebrate our Decade is a pretext to celebrate the work of the artists with whom we have had the pleasure of working and growing. Celebrate our Decade is to celebrate the most recent history of contemporary Cuban art.
