Valladolid, Spain, 1991

Some years ago Eloy began working with wax molds and discovered how to use certain techniques on surfaces, creating paintings. The series we present is entitled The Palace. This name is inspired by the architecture known as infilate di stanze. In architecture, an enfilade (or "infilata di stanze") is a series of rooms formally aligned one after the other. This design was common in great European architecture since the Baroque period. Eloy works on a single wax mold into which he scratches and draws to create a kind of negative drawing/engraving. He then makes a strappo on the mold, which gives me the positive image, which is the final painting. The interesting thing is that each time he scratches a new drawing/etch into the mold he never keeps the previous ones and they are all part of the dense visual fabric of the new work. It is as if you have to walk through all the rooms of a palace without corridors, an infinite one. He uses the drawings, accidents and remains of each piece to develop the next, establishing a continuous series of paintings that now totals almost 50 canvases, each one unique in its kind.

For Eloy, this series as a whole is like a song, and each painting is a beat. For the artist, his work is a plastic observation in processes related to musical ideas of rhythm and time, something that has obsessed him since he started making music and painting.

Eloy Arribas' paintings are striking because of their unique surfaces: worn, rough and very elaborate. They appear to be sculpted directly, as when people carve names into urban walls. Their intriguing technique evokes a process of elimination, like sculpting clay, and is reminiscent of the concept of palimpsest, with previous layers partially visible. Although his chaotic marks create a frenetic atmosphere, he balances them with a restrained palette and almost childlike figures that merge with the background. We should keep in mind that his first entry into art was as a graffiti writer, of which he still retains elements in his visual imagery. One of his first artistic references was the painter Cy Twombly. Although he has always been interested in paintings not made by professionals but by accidents or natural events that act on surfaces or objects, a sort of vernacular graffiti.

He has had solo exhibitions at Galería Herrero de Tejada, Galería Miquel Alzueta, Freight & Volume Gallery, Arts & Leisure, Arts & Leisure Tejada Gallery, Miquel Alzueta Gallery, Freight& Volume Gallery, Arts&Leisure Gallery, Moya Museum, Da2 Museo de Arte Contemporáneo; and collectively at ArtNueve Gallery and collectively in ArtNueve Gallery, Centro Párraga, Museo Patio Herreriano de Contemporary Art, The Clemente Center NYC, The Curators Room, Salzamt Linz, Stellar Projects, DeliGrocery Gallery, among others. He has been invited by institutions such as La Casa Encendida, TAI School and the European Institute of Design as a lecturer. He currently lives and works in Madrid where he develops in parallel to the production of art, teaching in the Degree of Graphic Design of ESI.
