José Bedia
José Bedia

Havana, Cuba, 1959

José Bedia has been a pioneer of the radical transformation of Cuban Art that inaugurated the Volume 1 Exhibition, of which he was an integral part. From his participation in the monumental Magiciens de la Terre exhibition in 1989 to winning First Prize at the Beijing Biennial in 2010, Bedia's career has been international in scope. His works are in major private collections, as well as in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Tate Modern, London, and the PAMM. For his 30 years of artistic career, a retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles and recently an exhibition was dedicated to him at the MARCO Museum in Monterrey (Mexico) to celebrate his first five decades of artistic career.

His work fuses his tribal and ethnographic interests, using a fieldwork approach and adding layers of social and historical elements from many traditions around the world. As part of his artistic practice, he spends extended periods of time living with indigenous cultures in Africa, Asia and the Americas. From his interactions and experiences with these traditional cultures, he is able to return to his study and create, while exploring his search for the enduring archetypes of humanity.
