José Bedia
La Habana, Cuba, 1959
José Bedia ha sido pionero de la transformación radical del Arte Cubano que inauguró la Exposición Volumen 1, de la que formó parte integrante. Desde su participación en la monumental exposición Magiciens de la Terre en 1989 hasta la obtención del Primer Premio en la Bienal de Pekín en 2010, la carrera de Bedia ha tenido gran alcance internacional. Sus obras se encuentran en importantes colecciones privadas, así como en las colecciones del Museo de Arte del Condado de Los Ángeles, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Los Ángeles, el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el Museo Whitney de Arte Americano de Nueva York, el Museo Guggenheim de Nueva York, la Tate Modern de Londres y el PAMM. Por sus 30 años de carrera artística se le dedicó una exhibición retrospectiva en el Museo Fowler de Los Ángeles y recientemente se le dedicó una exhibición en el Museo MARCO de Monterrey (México) para celebrar sus primeras cinco décadas de carrera artística.
Su obra fusiona sus intereses tribales y etnográficos, utilizando un enfoque de trabajo de campo y añadiendo capas de elementos sociales e históricos de muchas tradiciones del mundo. Como parte de su práctica artística, pasa largos periodos de tiempo conviviendo con culturas indígenas de África, Asia y América. A partir de sus interacciones y experiencias con estas culturas tradicionales, es capaz de volver a su estudio y crear, al tiempo que explora su búsqueda de los arquetipos permanentes de la humanidad.
