Brenda Cabrera
Havana, Cuba, 1997
Brenda Cabrera trained at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana in 2017 and at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in 2022. Her artistic concerns make her explore techniques such as painting and drawing, although she rightly approaches new technologies in the artistic field such as NFT.
Brenda has an exceptional ability to transcend her own reality and part of human nature to build her own imaginary that is materialized in her universe of Prototypes, The artist's work, hybrid figures that inhabit their own ecosystems and critically explore identity, gender roles and contemporary forms of coexistence. She obtains in them a creative way to generate a community of diverse people as a self-criticism to the current society, but at the same time, she generates a healthy habitat whose inhabitants transform and mutate in harmony, in short, a utopian, better society that she believes is possible. The complexity and perfection of nature become for her a very important reference, and at the same time an evidence of how free and harmless man's life in community could be.
Brenda's humanoids navigate mysterious, complex and exuberant forests full of symbolism and theatricality where line, gesture and color coexist to generate a dreamlike scenario that transcends the limits of the canvas. These avatars respond mostly to feminine archetypes or to what we understand as femininity. Long hair, defined bodies, slender and unblemished, and faces often lacking a look configure a reiterative idea that characterizes this particular universe. This is how the feminine is equated with the wild and magical of the darkest and most recondite dimension of nature, so that it approaches the sublime to speak of fertility and death, primitivism, that which inhabits the subway, in short, the origin and end of the human.
Brenda's humid and fertile landscapes are presented as living organisms, enveloping and ambivalent, where vegetation simultaneously embodies protection and threat. In this environment, hybrid figures emerge that condense a sexual, primitive and ritual dimension, placing the viewer before a nature that is both a generative matrix and a devouring force, where beauty coexists with latent violence.
The surrealism of his work and his particular chromatic palette turn nature into a scenario of aesthetic and political reinvention, where the monstrous, the sexual, the sexual, the queer and the wild emerge as forms of resistance and emancipatory power.
Endowed with a singular visual grammar, Brenda Cabrera is positioned as a solid and affirmed artist, with participation in galleries and art fairs on both sides of the Atlantic. Her work has been internationally recognized, with the acquisition award VOX Libera: Women who inspire in the 20th edition of the International Art Fair of Bogota (ARTBO) where he also presented a solo show in 2024. He has participated in exhibitions and fairs of international relevance such as Art Basel Miami with Proyectos Monclova (2025), ZONA MACO (2026), URVANITY and several exhibitions in Madrid and Havana. In Milan he participated in Erotika III, Clitsplash project at Superstudio Maxi, Unfair Milano, Italy (2024). His work has been the subject of critical analysis in academic contexts such as the Teratophilia symposium at New York University (NYU).
