Raul Diaz Reyes

Madrid, Spain, 1977

At first glance, the work of Raúl Díaz Reyes stands out for its minimalist visuality, tinged with hints of oneirism and metaphysics. But his focus is the exploration of language as a concrete cultural object, which connects his work with the tradition of Conceptual Art. This connects his work with the tradition of Conceptual Art. Raúl's visual imaginary is the result of his continuous explorations in the fields of contemporary aesthetics and semiotics: art history, abstraction, comics, cinema, architecture and design; landscaping, poetry, geometry, music, even archeology. Its starting point is to alter and merge codes corresponding to sound, image and word, and to create a hybrid sign that allows to test a sort of trans-language. This approach, essentially synaesthetic, seeks a new materiality and/or architecture for human memory.

His signs are, at the same time an artistic fact, a linguistic fact, a graphic accident and an instrument of intellectual mysticism. There is no trace of dichotomy in his work: nature, culture; text, image; poetry, painting; logos and icon merge, thus generating a body that has the imprecise form of a primitive totem, an open book or an artifact.

His first training was as an engraver, but after finishing his studies he began to explore other artistic disciplines. When we approach his work we notice that in the background there is a solid dialogue between traditional techniques and new technologies. An example of this is the work META-LINHA (2022), a project carried out in collaboration with TextielLab, a textile laboratory located in Textiel Museum (The Netherlands): first, Raul produced a set of digital images from collages where he applies graphic editing techniques to digital paintings. These images were then decoded and produced as textiles by software.
