Arlés del Rio
Arles del Rio

Havana, Cuba, 1975

Starting from my experiences as an individual within society and my reflections on the nature of art, I play with the graphic or conceptual associations of any social, political, and/or cultural phenomenon with found materials and objects, which I manipulate, reproduce or reinterpret to embody illusions, utopias, ideological issues, etc.

Space and its context are vital in my work to generate ideas in specific sites. Dimensions, materials, media (sculpture, painting, installation, photography, drawing, etc.) constitute subordinate resources in the representation of these ideas, and are fundamental for a functional location and a direct interaction or dialogue of the viewer with my works.

Arlés del Río has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, among which the following stand out: US - About usat the Taller Gorría Gallery; Subway (public works located in different parts of Havana); and The need for other airscollateral exhibition to the XII Havana Biennial. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, among the most relevant we can mention: Off SeasonEl Apartamento, Havana (2023); Home & HopeBrigade Gallery, Copenhagen (2022); Illness Has a Colorcollateral exhibition to the XIII Havana Biennial, Estudio 50 - El Apartamento, Havana (2019); AtalayaTaller Gorría - El Apartamento, Havana (2019); New ColorsRobert Miller Gallery, New York (2015); and Stealing Base: Cuba at Bat, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Kentucky (2015).

Del Rio has also participated in important international trade fairs such as The Armory Show (with an individual project) in New York, Chicago Expo y Untitled Art in Miami. He has also been awarded the SOMA Mexico Fellowship in Mexico City, the Cuban Artist Fund Fellowship in New York and the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship in Vermont.
