Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia

Sabatini Building, 4th Floor

Project management: Manuel Segade

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía has inaugurated Collection. Contemporary Art: 1975-Present, The new presentation of its permanent collection proposes a renewed reading of the last fifty years of art from Spain, from the beginning of the democratic transition to the present day. The opening of this new tour represents one of the most relevant museographic transformations undertaken by the institution in recent years.

Installed on the entire fourth floor of the Sabatini Building, the new section occupies more than 3,000 square meters and brings together 403 works by 224 artists, many of them never before exhibited. The project proposes a critical review of contemporary artistic production through a narrative that combines historical, social, political and cultural perspectives, focusing on the contribution of Spanish art to the international scene.

Directed by Manuel Segade and developed since 2023 by the museum's curatorial teams, the new tour is articulated in 21 chapters organized through different thematic itineraries that replace strictly chronological readings. The proposal explores issues such as the construction of democracy, the social transformations that emerged after the Transition, counterculture, feminisms, identity politics, the AIDS crisis, new forms of representation and contemporary debates on memory, the body and cultural diversity.

The selection includes works by fundamental figures of contemporary creation such as Juan Genovés, Cristina Iglesias, Esther Ferrer, Juan Muñoz, Susana Solano, Guillermo Pérez Villalta, Ocaña, Ouka Leele, Alberto García-Alix, Joan Fontcuberta, Dora García or Pilar Albarracín, together with international artists whose practices have dialogued with the cultural and political processes developed in Spain during the last decades.

One of the highlights of this new presentation is the incorporation of recent acquisitions and works by emerging generations, reflecting the evolution of contemporary artistic practices and the growing plurality of languages, formats and sensibilities present in today's art. Installations, photography, video, performance, sculpture, documentary practices and interdisciplinary projects coexist in a journey designed to bring the public closer to the transformations of the art scene from the late twentieth century to the present day.

The inauguration of Collection. Contemporary Art: 1975-Present also marks a new stage in the Reina Sofia's museographic strategy, which is committed to a dynamic collection in permanent revision. According to the museum, the goal is to offer a more open, accessible and critical vision of recent history, understanding art as a tool to interpret the tensions, changes and challenges that have defined contemporary society.

The new section can be visited from February 18, 2026 and constitutes one of the main permanent exhibition projects of the Reina Sofia Museum for the coming years, consolidating its position as one of the institutions of reference for the study and dissemination of international contemporary art.
