Roberto Diago

Havana, Cuba, 1971

Roberto Diago (Havana, 1971) examines the condition of the Cuban Afro-descendant in the social context of the Cuban Revolution. His is a cultural and sociological perspective that fully understands the effects of colonial processes on the nations that suffered them. These marks are visible at the levels of marginalization and segregation, but also at the epistemic and linguistic levels. Diago denounces, exposes, develops exercises of cultural resistance that allow her to speak from a self-conscious otherness, maroon and vindictive of other religious belongings, other canons of beauty, another look on the white world that inhabits the West.

A graduate of the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Diago has been developing a solid career as a creator. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and in events of the stature of the Venice Biennial, the Havana Biennial and the Portugal Biennial. His work is part of important institutional collections: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA), Havana, Cuba; Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece; Kikoïne Foundation, Paris, France; Brownstone Foundation, Paris, France; District 798, Xin Dong Cheng Space for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China; Fort Lauderdale Museum, Florida, USA; Thevon Christierson Collection, London, UK; Kaméléone Foundation, France; CIFO Collection, Florida, USA; Museum 54, New York, USA; Pizzuti Collection, Ohio, USA; The Rubin Museum of Art: The Collection, New York, USA; Boston Fine Art Museum, Boston, USA; Jorge Perez Collection, Miami, USA; Museum of Black Civilizations, Dakar, Senegal.
