Márcio Vilela holds a degree in photography from the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Tomar and a master's degree in the European Master of Fine Art Photography from IED Madrid.

His research is related to landscape studies and the relationship between art and science, being frequently involved with research institutions in astrophysics, aerospace and hydrographic engineering, among others.

In 2008, he was one of the seven artists selected for the Anteciparte award. In 2010, he completed a two-year artist residency at Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa, which resulted in the solo exhibition Mono in 2012. That same year, he was selected for the Abre Alas 8 award, organized by A Gentil Carioca gallery, in Rio de Janeiro. Also in 2012, he participated in an artistic residency on the island of São Miguel, Azores, at the invitation of Galeria Fonseca Macedo. This residency resulted, in 2014, in the Azores exhibition and the publication of an artist book with the same title.

That same year, at the invitation of the Aloísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Art, she completed an artistic residency in the city of Recife, with the aim of developing a new work on the study of landscape and color. In 2015, he participated in the Pico do Refúgio Creative Residencies, on the island of São Miguel, developing the research base for the Satellites series.
