The fall of Antonio Maceo meant a deep fracture for many in the framework of the last attempt to achieve the independence of the island of Cuba at the end of the 19th century. That moment was captured in a painting made by a veteran of the war, commissioned by the new nationalist elites that were emerging in the young nation. It is one of the first episodes of historical manipulation in Cuba, marking the beginning of an era of intervention in the representations of the past with the purpose of legitimizing power.
This project approaches the event from the controversy raised by the famous painting. Rectifications... articulates a set of pieces that, at different levels, problematize the archetypes of Cubanness in its first visual formulations, the construction of history and its manipulation mechanisms, as well as the landscape understood as a backdrop to the historical narrative and its poetic dimension.
