Villa Clara, Cuba, 1955

Rocio Garcia is one of the most relevant artists within the contemporary pictorial tradition on the island. Her work, which constitutes a kind of "rara avis" in the Cuban context, makes a singular use of color and develops her style full of expressiveness and mystery.

Her training as a painter is traversed by two fundamental schools. On the one hand, the Cuban school, where she finished her secondary studies in 1975, at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana; on the other hand, the Russian experience -thanks to the scholarship obtained at the "Repin" Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg-. Both pictorial traditions were essential in the articulation of a very personal work in which the expressive and symbolic use of color, the forceful simplicity of drawing and the theatrical creation of marked narrative content converge. The union of these elements, together with the themes preferred by the artist (in many cases of homoerotic filiation), catalyze in canvases like enigmatic scenes, moments in which the characters are surprised in intimacy. His work refers to cinematographic logic, in which an idea closes in on itself from the sequential component.

Her career as a painter has an undeniable solidity, based not only on the number of solo and group exhibitions she has developed, but also on the relevant events in which she has participated and the collections to which she belongs. Among the most important we could mention Beyond EroticismCentro Cultural Español, Miami, USA; The MissionFactoría Habana, Havana, Cuba; The ThrillerNational Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba; Utopia Horizons. Contemporary Cuban ArtPalazzo Ca'Zenobio, Venice, Italy; Post truth, pleasure and pain (works by Cuban artists)Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, North Carolina, USA; The Caribbean: Crossroads of the worldQueens Museum of Art, New York, USA, among others.

Rocio's works are in prestigious collections around the world, such as the Brownstone Foundation, Paris, France; the Ron Pizzuti Collection, USA; the National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba; The Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation, USA; the Farber Collection, USA; Cheng Xin Dong Space for Contemporary Art, China; Contemporary Art Fund, University of Michigan, USA; the Center for Cuban Studies, USA; the Repin Academy of Art Museum, Russia.
