Miki Loyal

Seville, Spain, 1974
"Miki Leal, catalogued as a figurative painter with a pop and surrealist streak, also assumes in his work other diverse stylistic influences that make the previous classification no longer make sense. Among the themes that attract him to draw, there are not only the family and domestic environment, the dreamlike, his passion for various musical genres and a certain tendency to represent iconic characters of our world; there is also another aspect that emerges from time to time and becomes the protagonist: graphics, although not literally referring to the representation of signs, but to pieces of design created from geometric elements -read tiles, mosaics, terrazzo and other floorings composed of drawings that are repeated in schemes-. And, along with this graphic design, he is interested in how time passes over these elements, their use and wear, their erosion and survival, which makes them become interesting pictorial findings". (Virginia Torrente)
Miki Leal studied Fine Arts at the University of Seville and currently works and lives in Madrid. The mixture of multiple cultural influences, his deep connection with music and literature, and the fusion of different styles distinguish his painting. These elements are expressions of social patterns that distinguish his generation: rebelliousness, anarchism and oversaturation.
He has worked in different media, from drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and textiles to installations. In 1999 he founded in Seville, together with visual artists Juan del Junco and Fernando Clemente, the artistic collective The Richard Channin Foundation, active until 2004. In 2019, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo dedicated to this collective a retrospective exhibition curated by Sema D'Acosta. Previously he had created, together with artists Jacobo Castellano, Jaime de la Jara, Abraham Lacalle, curator María José Solano and designer Esteban Navarro, the Madrid-based project Noestudio 7.
Miki Leal's work is part of important collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville, the Caja Madrid Collection, the RED BULL Collection, Hangar 7 in Salzburg, the Community of Madrid, the Junta de Andalucía, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC), the universities of Salamanca and Seville, the Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo (ARTIUM), the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, the Contemporary Art Collection of the Fundación Bancaria La Caixa, the Collection of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome (RAER), the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M), among others.
