Pond, from the Natural Filters series,
2023, hand-cut paper (Stramore Cold Press cardboard 300 gsm), 189 x 129 cm

It represents the coastal mangrove that grows in brackish waters in Havana and around the world. Mangroves act as natural walls that protect inland areas from inclement weather and the soil from salinization. Coastal development has led to large-scale destruction of mangroves. The Natural Filter layers are not data-driven, but the complex composition of cut paper symbolically conveys the environmental damage caused by the disappearance of mangroves. New mangrove forests are being planted in Cuba in an effort to reverse this damage.
